10 Ways To Cut Future Cancer Risk In Early Age
Dear Reader,
This message is for the young and healthy. Cancer typically strikes during your later years; more and more evidence is finding that the healthy habits you begin in your youth are the best defense against being diagnosed with this terrible disease later on.
These are ten simple strategies young people can put in place now:
1. Be smart about the sun. You can get a sunburn in as little as 15 minutes out in the sun, summer or winter, so be sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF
15 is fine) on all exposed skin. Be especially careful during peak hours, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, even when it's cloudy.
2. Move as much as possible. Research finds that getting 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise; 75 minutes of vigorous workouts over a week helps bring down your risk of cancer later on. You also want to watch for extended periods of sitting as this can raise cancer risk, even if you exercise.
3. Keep an eye on the scale. No matter how much you workout,
keeping your weight in check is another solid way to reduce your risk of cancer. Having a BMI of 25 or more is associated with higher risk of colon, kidney, pancreas and liver cancers as well as types of lymphoma and myeloma, without regard to activity or diet.
4. Eat your veggies. The more the better according to the experts. These foods are natural sources of beneficial antioxidants that help prevent free radicals (cancer causing particles) from doing damage to the body cells. Getting
nutrients through diet, over supplements, is generally agreed to be the best strategy.
5. Not so much beef or bacon. Make the red meats (beef, lamb, pork) a treat not an everyday meal, and opt instead for fish, chicken and beans more often. Studies have found the higher saturated fat in red meat adds to the risk of cancer. What's more, cooking meat until it's well done may release carcinogens. Research has also found that certain parts of red meats do harm to the colon. If you do choose
them, go with lean cuts and control your portion, avoid frying or charbroiling anything.

6. Go for whole grains. Not just whole grain breads, but pastas as well as brown rice, oatmeal, popcorn, barley, rye and quinoa in place of any white starch and refined carb. Whole grains are also natural sources of antioxidants and other compounds (phenols, lignans, saponins) linked to a reduced cancer risk.
7. Don't burn it. We touched on this in part one, but we'll expand on it here because it's so important. Charring, burning or grilling any meat or fish can cause heterocyclic
amines (HCAs) to be formed. These dangerous compounds have been shown to up the risk of stomach and colorectal cancers.
8. Ease up on drinking alcohol. While an occasional drink is fine, you want to keep under the limit of two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women. Those who are not frequent drinkers have lower cancer risk when compared to drinkers. Drinking is also a proven risk factor for head, neck, liver and esophageal cancers.
9. Get screened when you should.
This is easy to put off, but very dangerous as routine health exams check for many cancers. At 50 years old you reach an age where you'll need more involved screening.
10. Do not smoke. This doesn't just mean cigarettes, but tobacco in any of its forms, snuffs, cigars, pipes, hookah and chewing tobacco as well. Did you know that tobacco has over 7,000 chemicals, 250 of that number are known to be harmful, 13 have been associated with cancer.
